R4 - Green Efforts

The R4 Collection - for a Greener Concordia

The Concordia Bookstore is no longer giving away free plastic bags with purchases. Instead you may purchase a non-woven tote-bag instead for 99¢ each. Ideally, bring your own bag or Re-use a bag you got from us before.

The profits from the sale of these tote-bags will be donated to on-campus charities:
Half will be given to the R4 program, and the other half will be donated to the Concordia Emergency Food Fund.

Money raised for worthy causes:

MONTREAL/ April 13, 2011 - Concordia Campus Retail Stores is happy to announce that it will be contributing $1,500 to both the Emergency Food Fund and the R4 (Rethink, Reduce/Reuse, Recycle) program from the proceeds of the sale of reusable bags in our stores during the past year.

For a Greener Concordia

Since 2009, Campus Retail Stores (Bookstore, Computer Store, Digital Store) are no longer giving away plastic bags with purchases. Customers are instead invited to buy a non-woven tote-bag for 99¢ each or bring their own reusable bag. This initiative has eliminated the use of more than 125 000 plastic bags each year, providing Concordia with an environmentally friendly shopping experience.

In honour of Earth Day, from April 15 to April 21, 2011 Campus Retail Stores will be giving away a reusable bag with every purchase of $10 or more.

In September 2006, the R4 Concordia Bookstore Collection had its debut at both the SGW (Downtown) and Loyola Bookstores. Items on sale have included:

  • The 'now famous' reusable R4 mug (limited edition)
  • Used binders ($0.99)
  • Recto Verso notebooks (re-used paper notebooks)
  • Used lab coats

Proceeds from the R4 Collection will go towards promoting environmental stewardship on campus and contribute to the R4 Concordia program (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).

Items on sale at the R4 Collection derive from refurbished waste destined to be land filled or recycled, Concordia departments performing 'spring cleanings', student lockers lost and found as well as donated 'environmentally friendly' products. The goal of the collection is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, offer affordable reused school supplies to students and promote sustainable behaviors and actions.

The R4 Collection will also offer free recycling services to the Montreal and Concordia Community and collect batteries, cellular phones, ink cartridges, CD- ROM / DVD and one-sided paper.
